Craniosacral Therapy in Regina

Craniosacral Therapy is a gentle, hands-on approach that releases tensions deep in the body to relieve pain and dysfunction and improve whole-body health and performance. Osteopath John E. Upledger developed Craniosacral Therapy in the 1970s.

Our goal with Craniosacral Therapy is to restore or increase the cranial rhythm, allowing for more production and movement of cerebrospinal fluid. By engaging with this system we can change the symmetry, quality, amplitude and rate of the cranial system. The craniosacral system is intimately related to all the other systems of the body via fascia so when working on this system we are affecting the body as a whole.

Craniosacral Therapy is based on the premise that the bones of the head, spine, and pelvis are interconnected by a system of membranes and fluid-filled spaces called the craniosacral system. This system extends from the bones of the skull (the cranial bones) down to the sacrum (the triangular bone at the base of the spine). The craniosacral system also includes all the soft tissues that connect these bones, including the meninges (the membranes that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord), the cerebrospinal fluid that surrounds and cushions the brain and spinal cord, and the nerves that pass through the craniosacral system.

Craniosacral Therapy is sometimes used to treat conditions such as:

  • Chronic pain

  • Headaches

  • Migraines

  • TMJ disorders

  • Whiplash

  • Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

  • Fibromyalgia

  • Chronic fatigue syndrome

  • ADHD

  • Autism

  • Sensory processing disorder

Craniosacral Therapy can also be used to improve overall health and well-being. Craniosacral Therapy is a gentle, non-invasive therapy that can be used to help people of all ages, from infants to the elderly.

Frequently Asked Questions About Craniosacral Therapy

  • Craniosacral therapy is a very light touch therapy often using only 5 grams of pressure (think the weight of a nickel). This therapy is performed over clothes with the client often laying on their back or side. The craniosacral rhythm can be felt throughout the entire head so this treatment is a full body treatment being performed anywhere from the hands and feet to the head and everywhere in between.

  • It is best if you can give an accurate picture of your health and injuries prior to starting craniosacral therapy. This enables your therapist to design the most appropriate and effective treatment for you without aggravating pre-existing injuries.

  • It is best to not eat for at least 60-90 minutes before your massage treatment and only a light meal at that time.

  • Something comfy that is easy to move in as the treatment is done over clothes. You can always bring something to change into if you are coming from work.

  • It is important to let your therapist know prior to treatment but because of the light pressure involved no bruising should occur.

  • It's good to have some time set aside to relax and soak up all benefits of craniosacral therapy.
